IT's LOBSTER CATCHING TIME!!!!!

Florida's annual 48-hour mad dash for spiny lobsters is approaching the starting line. At 12:01 a.m. July 24, divers in state waters are permitted to begin bringing in the tasty crustaceans found on the seafloor in warm tropical waters.

Some will use tickle sticks, some will use snares, others will use bully nets, but all will be after the same goal: catching one's limit of spiny lobster, a clawless cousin of the Maine lobster named for its sharp, spiny points on its hard carapace, or shell.

Over 236,000 people were licensed to collect their limit of spiny lobster in 2018, and that number is expected to be about the same or slightly higher heading into 2019, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Lobster diving is part Easter egg hunt, part undersea world of Jacques Cousteau.

Lobster divers will explore the waters from Daytona Beach to Key West on the Atlantic coast, and from Marco Island to Homossassa on the Gulf Coast.

Richard Hunt, captain of Little Adam Fishing Charters in Fort Pierce, said he is excited to get wet Wednesday.
"This is a great time of year because, literally, every week we have something different," Hunt said. "We just came off red snapper fishing season, head right into lobster mini-season and Aug. 15 we start alligator hunting season."

Unlike previous years, Hunt said he won't be able to scout locations beforehand, but he's not worried about finding lobsters. "They're there," he said. "We have had north current, which tends to be cleaner, clearer water on the reefs, and we haven't really had any cold water come in yet from offshore," he said.

Sometimes during lobster mini-season on the Atlantic Coast north of Jupiter, cold water — as low as 55 degrees — can sweep up onto the continental shelf. That tends to prevent lobsters from walking north of the Palm Beaches.

Customer traffic has been robust at Deep Six Dive and Watersports in Jensen Beach, manager Steve Wood said, so he expects one of the best seasons in recent memory. "We've been seeing a lot more tanks for inspection, including customers we haven't seen in a year or two," Wood said. "We've also been selling more licenses this year."

Visibility reports have been good, Wood said. "Some of my staff was out Friday and they said they could see bottom at the Sand Pile," Wood said, referring to a 40-foot-deep spot off the St. Lucie Inlet. "I think we could see more night diving this year. The incoming tide will hit around 1 a.m., bringing in clean water."

Divers who plan to swim off the beaches, however, should prepare for visibility of 10 feet or less, which can be typical closer to shore. The patch reefs off St. Lucie and Indian River counties, a popular place for beach diving, should hold a few large lobsters, but not as many lobsters, so limits may be hard to come by.

Tank free
There are places along the Treasure Coast where scuba gear is not required, Wood said.

"I've caught them in 4 feet of water off Bathtub Beach," he said.

Dive flags
Remember, even if diving from a beach or kayak, a dive flag is required at all times.

Boaters must remain over 300 feet away from a posted dive flag on open water and over 100 feet away in an inlet or a pass.

By law, dive flags must be posted on the highest spot on the vessel or float.

North Causeway Island
Emergency repairs on the boat ramp at the North Causeway Island in Fort Pierce will coincide with the mini-season, St. Lucie County announced Monday. The ramp and parking lot will remain open, but access will be limited to one lane."We apologize for the unfortunate timing," the county said in a statement.

Lobster regulations
Sport season: July 24-25 (the last consecutive Wednesday and Thursday in July each year)

Regular season: Aug. 6-March 31, 2020

Size limit: Must measure a 3-inch carapace (head section from between the horns over the eyeballs to the where the head joins the tail). Lobster must be measured in the water and measuring device must be in possession of diver at all times.

Bag limit: 12 per person per day during sport season except in Monroe County and Biscayne National Park, where the limit is six. Six per person per day statewide during regular season.

License requirements: Saltwater fishing license plus $5 lobster harvest stamp

Other restrictions:

No egg-bearing females may be harvested or possessed.
No night diving is allowed in Monroe County during sport season.
Possession limits are enforced on and off the water.
Harvest of lobster is prohibited in John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park during the sport season and in Everglades National Park, Dry Tortugas National Park, no-take areas in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary and in the Biscayne Bay/Card Sound Lobster Sanctuary during both the 2-day sport season and regular season.
