I noticed at the end of construction between Brescia and Tradition on Gatlin there are Cameras on the Traffic signals. Does anyone know if this is to catch red light runners or is this just a traffic camera for the city to monitor?

Would guess it would be to catch red light runners... but I wouldnt think in that area, it would be a big problem... but what do I know, FL has changed a lot.

Yeah but what are they for? Are they connected to a system that sends out tickets or are they just traffic cameras? Not that I speed or run lights but it would be nice to know.

Wow, amazed at some of the responses. For the record, these infrared cameras aren't even photo-quality and are acutally there to improve traffic light flow/synchronization unless there is a clearly placed sign indicating "red light photo enforced". They are all over Florida, installed by the agencies that control the lights (usually county), and simply detect traffic building up at an intersection in order to allow for all traffic to flow through after one cycle, or prevent the light from cycling at unnecessary times. The biggest controversy around these cameras is that some county agencies (not sure about St. Lucie but this has been a problem in Broward and several others) haven't purchased the software to activate the cameras and thus they are sitting there doing NOTHING at the taxpayers expense. And also for the record, red light cameras are in over 25 states, including places where you wouldn't think it's a "big problem". And to break another world record, the only "need" for these cameras is revenue generation, plain and simple, because in any area where red light running is occurring more than average, rear end collisions are going to skyrocket due to would-be red light runners crashing into vehicles in front of them that decide to stop.

If you see a white "light bulb" on a stick hanging down in one of those traffic areas... THAT is the "running a red light" thing you are looking for. It turns red when the stop light changes to red. I believe I saw one at the high traffic intersection of Port St. Lucie Blvd and Jensen Beach Blvd. for the mall entrance/exit. It's supposed to tell you, and any cop sitting nearby, that the light is indeed RED.

House passes bill on red-light camera ticketing

The Associated Press
Monday, April 27, 2009

TALLAHASSEE — A bill that would set requirements for the use of automatic cameras to fine owners of vehicles that run red lights has gotten a green light in the Florida House.
The measure cleared the chamber Monday.
It would set civil fines at $150. The owner would be fined regardless of who was driving, just like a parking ticket. Owners could appeal. They would not, though, get points against their driver licenses, and insurance companies couldn't use the violations to raise premiums or cancel coverage.
The bill (HB 439) passed 101-7 and goes to the Senate, where a similar measure (SB 2004) is awaiting a vote.
