I don't think I have seen this brought up on here, but Portland was rated #1 by Forbes magazine as the most livable city in the US. America's Most Livable Cities - Forbes.com

They deserve it. I love Portland. It's great visiting friends there.

I'll bet there has been talk of this in the Portland Forum.

I love Portland and am glad to see this honor for the city. However, the unemployment rate is very high, and the cost of living is high, especially compared to wages. I'm not sure if this was part of the criteria the magazine used to determine "most livable."

I'd love to move there, but the lack of jobs, even minimum wage, is discouraging, not to mention the high rents and high heating costs. It's a great city to visit!

With seeing that more people will want to visit and live there and own this and that and up your cost of living.

Which is an absolutely postive thing as they all bring with them all of their knowledge, money and education. Most welfare seekers are not reading Forbes.
Raffie, southern Maine welcomes newcomers as well as their thoughts and ideas. As far as the increased COL, with it brings new ideas, wealth and hopes that they will want to bring with them an entrepreneurial spirit which in turn brings new jobs to the state. That can only be a good thing for the state of Maine.

I <3 your attitude. It is not as if Maine has too many people!

Ratings like the one by Forbes help people (like my DH) in their efforts to convince companies to open an office in Portland (vs. Boston). Thanks for the warm and welcoming attitude, Mermaid!!
