First - Portland is not NYC and the 2 or 3 NICE hotels we have would have a doorman I might tip for grabbing bags, opening doors, loading bags or going out of their way to do something for you. And even though a lot of jobs are service oriented, that does not warrant an automatic tip. A lot of those people make more than minimum wage and dont rely on tips to live (for instance retail positions make commission). Would you tip the salesgirl at Nordstrom? Of course not. Your postal worker, and cable technician aren't making minimum wage and neither is the garbage man.

The same tipping in NYC was also prevalent in Chicago when I lived there up until the late 70's. I don't know if it still is but I suspect so. I have never seen it as prevalent in Oregon. I think it is matter of tradition or custom in each area.

I think a lot of it is that Oregon is traditionally a poor state. People never had the cash to tip for services. Back in the old days (pre-1930's) you would have "tipped" someone by inviting them to dinner. But then you pretty much knew everybody in town by their first name.

When I first heard of tipping the garbage man, the mail person, etc, I was astounded. I can't see tipping someone who I don't even interact with just to do their job.
