You are wrong and posting misinformation. There was no Rifle used in the Newton shooting.

That's just stupid.

I guess me driving to work is antagonistic and insulting to people who have lost loved ones in car accidents...

If I remember right, in Oregon it is allowable and legal to carry a concealed weapon (without a permit) on your person while hunting or fishing and on the way to and from those activities.

Is this true and/or has this changed?

That's the law if you are hunting or fishing.
Big fine if you get caught doing either without a license on you.

Please set us straight on what type of gun was used in the slaughter of 20 6-year-olds.

I find a lot of this talk about gun control extremely disturbing. Death by guns is one of the smallest causes of death in the country, which accounts for just over 1% of preventable deaths in the country, half of those being suicides. There are more people that die from clerical errors in hospitals than are killed by a gun. More people that die from car accidents, from alcohol, from being poisoned or a number of other causes than by a gun. Guns are red herrings, not the actual problem, which is why politicians like talking about it...anything to distract people from the real issues.

Looks like it isn't enough to have mulitple threads in the Politics and Controversy board. Some people want to carry their obsession everywhere in cyberspace.

Your argument, in fact, is the real red herring. It's just plausible enough to make people say "hmmm" but if you really look at it... ... nope. Not buying it. Handguns have to go. Really. No handguns in private hands. They do very, very, little killing of "bad people" and much more killing of ordinary people having an extraordinarily bad day.

Hospitals do hurt and kill a large number of people each year but they also manage to (presently) save many more than they hurt. The same cannot be said about guns. The NRA claims that many people use guns defensively but this just isn't borne out by reality. Time and time again we see stories of well armed and well trained individuals taken by surprise. We have also lost huge numbers of Americans who thought they were safe because armed people were protecting them. Sadly, only in the case of a criminals ineptitude does the "good guy" with the gun get to reverse the odds and prevail.

I'm not sure how many children drown in swimming pools every year but there are efforts to reduce the number. Efforts that are vigorous enough to have made it to my attention even though I do not have small children and do not come from a swimming culture. Each problem requires its own solution and the existence of another problem does not negate the relevance of the problem under consideration.
