Hi everyone. Well I unofficially accepted the job in Portland. Just have to finalize everything with HR. The company's headquarters is based near the PDX airport. Wondering if you have any suggestions as a good place to rent for a while until I can see where I really want to be. One of the guys I will be working with recommended the Pearl district. He said he lived there for a year when he moved out there and liked it. I have a black lab so I would need a place that would allow pets and hopefully a doggy day care close by as I will be travelling quite a bit. Any suggestions? I don't necessary need to be in the city but still would like to be within a tolerable driving distance from the headquarters located near the PDX airport.

I currently own a newer home in a small suburb of Appleton WI so that what I am used to. I would like payments to be around $1000/month give or take depending on the location. I would like to experience living near the city but not sure I want to be right downtown. I will have a company vehicle and I am one that doesn't mind the drive to work and back (within reason). I would like to spend a good amount of time on the slopes in the winter and some trips to the coast in summer. I am a single 29 yr old male that doesn't know but a few people in the area so making new friends and eventually meeting Ms. Right are also an interest of mine.

I know there are several searches out there but each person has a unique situation and wants so it's hard to go off other's posts. Any information you can give is more than appreciated. Thank you.

Appleton?

Geesh, I don't know....
The most important thing is: are you aware that Portland is more liberal and the voting record is more strongly Democratic Party than Madison, WI? Portland is a bigger city than Madison, but still has much of the same vibes as Madison was back in the 1970's and '80 when I was there. I mean this is really important. City of Portland has a strong emphasis on Mass Transit for saving fossil fuel. We do boast the the average gas/ person rate is one of the lowest in the USA.

Don't even think about the Pearl unless your high rise condo has car parking as part of the deal. Seriously, street parking is very rare. And pay to park. The 'Pearl' district is a party / nightclub / bar drinking and youth place. What makes Portland unique and desirable to live is the Urban qualities of a city, surrounded by very rural and rugged areas beyond.

Seriously, I lived in Madison for about 12 years way back when, and I am going to recommend to anyone from Appleton, Oshkosh, or for that mater Lake Winnebago to the bay, is to look to just across the Columbia River to Washington State and eastern Vancouver, WA along I-205 for housing. (Don't confuse Vancouver WA with Vancouver B.C. in Canada which lies north of Seattle.) Rent will be cheaper in Washington State.

There are rentals of both homes and apartments just east of I-205 and north or just a mile or two either side of I-84. Troutdale and Wood Village might be a location if you don't want to deal with the bridge traffic across the Columbia River.

Others will have their advise, and comments about rush hour traffic to and from the Airport district and business in that area. and as always YMMV

Phil

Humm, I suggest you first look for dogie daycare near your employer. Because you will be traveling a lot you want one who offers extended care, not the usual 7am-7 pm situation.

It will be a couple years before the Interstate Bridge on I-5 replacement project gets underway BUT once that starts the interstate bridge out by the airport will see huge increase in use, and eventually a toll. Yes, housing is cheaper on the Washington side but you won't escape the Oregon income tax by living there. Lots of people make the commute but I wouldn't.

I wasn't aware of this. I've always been under the assumption if you live in WA and work in OR, you fall as a Wa resident, not needing to pay state income tax. Was I wrong?

AFAIK: you pay income tax per the tax laws in the state where the income was earned. (so, work in Oregon and pay Oregon income tax)

I was not aware of this. What if I live in Oregon and work in Washington?

You still pay Oregon income tax. There's no way around it if you either live or work in OR. If you want to avoid the tax, work in WA and live in WA, and cross the river to shop tax free!

Have you posted your question asking us to comment on specific places to live on the Vancouver, WA forum on this site? Not many regular posters on this Portland sub-forum are living in Vancouver.
