Appreciate everyone's suggestions. We're really looking forward to this trip since I lived in Oregon for a while with my mom when I was about 18 months old. For some reason I can't remember much about it, but I have old black-and-white pics of me in a stroller at my uncle's house, which was a big log affair he called Chemeketa, or something like that. Dunno the actual spelling. I can't find it on any map, unfortunately; would be interesting to visit.

Forgot to answer the time question: Hoping to be in the WA/OR area for a couple of weeks.

I have one more question, based on what I've learned about the weather in August, which I'm now wondering might not be a little too warm for me. Would September be a better time to visit? I know the chance of rain is greater, but not by that much according to the sites I've seen. The temp seems to be an average of about five degrees lower, which sounds right up my alley.

There are two great reasons to visit in September, the kids are in school and the weather typically wonderful. August is the favorite time for family vacations, many are out of town so transit/traffic is lighter during rush hours.

I second visiting in September. I first visited the PNW in September 1996, decided I had to move here, and was able to do so a year later. The weather was mostly gorgeous (sunny and 70s), but there were a few gray, misty mornings that cleared up by noon, which I enjoyed. It rained maybe twice during my two-week visit. I remember reading that September is the least windy month on the coast, where it's almost always windy. When people want to come visit me, I always advise that they do so in September.

Thanks - we're definitely doing the September thing. It's peak hurricane month here on the East coast anyway; another good reason to get outta town.
