I used to go to the opera since I was a child with my family in S.F., well into my 20's, have loved a good cafe since my Berkeley days, and yes museums are wonderful. There is something so exciting about living in a big city when you are young and you stay up later, eat late, spend holidays with friends and meet people from everywhere. Seattle offers that but Portland, not really.
Portland is much more "cosmopolitan" than it was 20 years ago. I'm in my mid 40's and I am floored whenever I go into the city and see how much excitement and buzz there is going on at all hours of the day and night --- so much different than when I was in my teens and 20's when there were very few hip, lively neighborhoods and the area around the old bus mall shut down at 5pm every day. Sure it's not Seattle or SF, those places are so much bigger and have similar (but not exactly the same) west coast vibes. But I respectfully disagree with anyone who says that Portland is not cosmopolitan and doesn't have an energy or buzz to it. There is clearly something special going on in the city, warts and all.

You know, I find it funny. Back in the day, I used to get away up to Seattle for weekends. Sometimes to see a touring play, or some other excuse. I always stayed downtown, and was horrified at how there was NOTHING to do outside of whatever was my purpose for going. The city was dead once the business folk left. I mean, dead. I'm imagine that's changed, but it forever ended my desire to want to make Seattle a weekend destination.

This is just a flat-out non-truth. I don't know where you're coming up with this.

i remember when you could take your bike on the bus when there wasnt room on the bike divice now you have to wait a hour for the next bus when theres no room, thats the only bad thing about the bus in the hilly suburbs and they sometimes dont see you at night, and daylight if its a mean driver
