I am pondering a move from Seattle to Portland. I'm tired of the new yuppie attitude of Seattle. I'm looking for down to earth women in their 30's and 40's. What is the dating scene like in Portland for this group? I love the Portland Farmers Market on Saturday at PSU. Thoughts?

Paul McCartney (and Stevie Wonder) said it best: "people are the same whereever you go..."

I don't know much about the dating scene but having compared both cities Portland is far more "real" and down to earth in almost every way. People are a bit warmer and friendlier too. Notice there's no thread on this board dedicated to a Portland Freeze.

Free web dating site that is quite functional for the Portland area:
Plenty of Fish: Google it.

On this City-Data site, on the Relationship sub-forum, several threads on Plenty of Fish exist. Some report that POF is not very good in some cities, other cities, like Portland, POF seems to do OK. But I expect you already know this: the pool of people is only the people who sign up for the service in your local area. You gets what's 'dey is.

Aside: Just a suggestion, be cautious using a term like "Down-To-Earth" Girl. Down to Earth as a code word can have different meanings in different parts of the USA. In parts of Michigan, Down-to-Earth means the lowest economic / social status Trailer Park Mama, there is; as in the only thing with lower social status is the ground itself. Try to re-phrase your quest to be more in line with "not social climbing, materialistic, A-list conscious, latest fashion trendy, cold heart, ultra high maintenance, young lady who seeks to enhance her own ego as a center of attention and adoration by the rich and powerful." then add the long list of positives that you seek.

In other words homely, fat and unshaven armpits?

Portland won't disapoint.

The first thing that popped into my mind when I read "down to earth women" was a smelly hippy girl with bushy armpits stringing beads at a barter fair. I always felt that if someone hasn't found their "mate" by the time they are in their mid 30s to early 40s they either don't really want to be with some one else or they are too picky.

I don't think that is true at all. Plenty of urban Americans are just getting married, and some for the first time, in their 30s and 40s and having kids for the first time at that age as well. I think it's wonderful, personally. Most people are much more mature at that age, have their careers established and are financially stable and secure, and are more likely to stay in the relationship for the long-haul and be far more mature parents. The younger marriages end up in divorce way more often. The "20" of today is more like the 13 of yesteryear. Anyhow, what's wrong with being picky? It's the people who aren't very picky and "settle" for someone they aren't into 100% who end up divorced in no time - or at the very least, unhappy for the rest of their lives. The OP seems to know what he wants. Why make fun of that? There is someone for everyone. Even the bushy-armpit barter fair girls
