My family is moving back to Portland, my home of many years, after a brief period away. I am Caucasian; my pre-K son is Ethiopian by birth. Until recently, we lived on the west side of Portland; I am currently renting out the home I own in SW.

I expected we'd eventually move to the N or NE, so my son could have classmates who look like him. But I won't be able to sell & buy any time soon after we return. To change neighborhoods, we'd have to continue renting out our SW home, and rent for ourselves in N/NE...

Have your children attended schools around Portland where there are a very small minority of African American/African descent students? What schools, and what has their experience been?

Thank you!

My son attends middle school in SW Portland. His school is quite diverse and includes a large population of Somali and other African American students. They even have some clubs exclusively for African American students (ie. a boys basketball league). The feeder elementary schools include Capitol Hill, Markham & Stephenson. I think both Capitol Hill & Markham serve relatively large ethnic populations. Is your SW property in one of those boundary areas? If so, you might want to check out those schools.
