Interesting cover story in this week's Willamette Week regarding the multi-culturalism at David Douglas High School.

Living just to the west of 82nd these days and driving out to the outer eastside neighborhoods frequently to go to a lot of the food markets out there, it's interesting the number of different immigrants groups that have settled in that area. Between the Russians, Mexicans, East Africans, Vietnamese, and Chinese--along with other groups--it's a lot more diverse than the stereotype of Portland being only "liberal white people". As far as David Douglas High School goes, I think having immigrants or children of immigrants in someways might help the graduation rate--there might be more motivation and a drive to succeed.

Interesting fact regarding David Douglas High School--actor Sam Elliot(he played the cowboy in the Big Lebowski and Virgil Earp in Tombstone--along with about a hundred other roles as a cowboy) is a past graduate of the school...

Though I think Portland is whiter than many places to the east and south, I also think it has loads of diversity. Part of the quality of the place. Of course, all diversity is not created equal. There are diverse places in the Southwest that aren't on the same plane as Portland. Miami is also diverse. But it has what I'd call the bad kind. Pray that Portland remains the exemplar of good diversity it has been.

I have always believed that Portland is more diverse than the mass appears to think it is; therefore, I always have trouble with postings that whine about the lack of it. It's diverse enough. I think people just expect the pieces of the pie to be equal in this area (25% this, 25% that. . .) and that's just stupid.

Chicago isn't that far from Minneapolis, if you enjoy that kind of food, and I really do, you can find them there.

People say it because they think diversity means "bigger or equal number to white people" when in reality there are plenty of recent immigrants who are white.

Yeh, if they come from parts of Europe or the rest of the world underrepresented in the past, that's increased diversity. Like if you had an influx of Brazilians, it would make you more diverse.
