NO! Portland was a cool city but is now way too expensive if you actually want to be in a cool neighborhood close to other places. The constant drizzle for 9 months straight is tolerable for about 2 years and then simply becomes depressive.

Where should you move? CHATTANOOGA!!!

Chattanooga is what Portland wishes it was. You actually, for real, have a seemingly infinite amount of outdoors activities all well within 45 minutes. Portland claims this but in reality you cannot ever get to Mt. Hood to actually snowboard in under 90 minutes. Add traffic and you're going on 2+ hours. The coast is the same. And the traffic in Portland SUCKS. That's one reason so many people bicycle Portland, it is faster to get anywhere in the city by bike than car. But it is almost always rainy and cold.

Rock Climbing, Mountain Biking, Hiking, Camping, White Water Rafting, Kayaking, Paddleboarding, Hang Gliding. It's all here, in every direction, and there is NO TRAFFIC. Portland has some of the worst traffic ever, on par and sometimes worse than NY.

You get all 4 seasons here, including a real fall. Portland has some things that turn yellow in the fall and then it rains a lot.

Best part of Chattanooga is you can go back in time. Wish you got into NE Portland 10 years ago? Highland Park and Southside in chattanooga are like that now and things are blowing up fast. You can still get a decent house for under $130k or buy some fixer uppers/flippers for under $80k.

The time to get into Chattanooga is now. Come on down south and play!

Do you work for the Chattanooga recruitment office or something?

Chattanooga is a fine place, but it's not much like Portland at all.....I've been.

Apart from the climate, politics, demographics, economy, size, religiosity and geography, Chattanooga is just like Portland.

Wink Seattle, atlanta, florida, ect.

Portland is the land of unemployment, utopia lovers from NYC,hipsters with big inheritances, gangsters and gangs,, Gays to the max.,extreme ecology activists(don't wear any fur),and a lot of Lesbian couples you don't dare insult, they'll ruin you(they recently drove a bakery out of business, cause the bakery refused to do a lesbian wedding cake.)NYC group of socialism moved entire there,if you can put up with that. You better be radical,liberal,left-wing"progressive" and PC in every way, they don't take moderates or righties. They also have dangerous gangs..Portland can be viewed in "Portlandia," the satire series, but it's very true.In fact, it's not even extreme enough.I don't think you'd find a job there--or a girl friend.

Seattle would suit your tech-job needs and out land hobbies. It is expensive, but at least there's the tech industry.Portland only has the "PC-snob industry."Plus, the great outdoors, great coast, the Puget Sound. in Seattle; I have relatives there..They still had forests, at that point.

Atlanta became the new, modern city with jobs, everyone went there,You might check out reviews;I suspect job prospects better. The Sun Belt is doing better, people are leaving the west coast.(Seattle has great coasts.)And I heard the South was booming.(But I also just heard Idaho was jumping!!jobs!!)North or South Dakota has more work, but little housing; it's freezing. Maybe you are an Alaskan;but those months of darkness and freezing, sound not you. But, talk about wilderness.Lots of artists have settled there(a bad sign)But maybe it's your adventure land!! Get some real reviews, maybe it's not spoiled yet.You sound like an adventurer..

I know well, an ex-Chicagoan, who said a woman cannot go out on the street, alone, in broad daylight, guys tried to attack her,Ditto for the bad areas. They are supposed to have strict gun-control laws; resulting in one of the highest crime and violence records in the U.S.It's law-biding people who can't have guns. She and her husband left,as soon as they could,Chicago was so dangerous to live in.The slums were SO BAD,so dangerous, you better not be low-wage there.I know corruption and crime there have been bad for a long time. It sounded terrible, and she's not a cowardly person either.I would go in person, if you're so interested make sure you'd live in safe areas.

(I would not recommend my state,Oregon, as the job-field is so flat.Dead.the govts, are going bankrupt, as are many of the counties,) I hope this helps a little.

I'm well aware of the Winterhawks though. I used to go to ECHL games when we had a team, there's no AHL team in the area either here. And the fan support for RBNY can be tremendous. I do watch Timbers and Seattle home games since they have good atmospheres. The thing with RBNY (and all NY Metro area teams) are that what you get in terms of fan support varies. I sit in the supporter section and the game was sold out this past weekend with 25k there, and it was great. And yet other times only 12k show up and it's quite dull.

For me to move to the NW this would need to be the case:

#1 Job outlook for the Information Technology field. It should be great regardless of where you go, I can only assume it's fine in that area.

#2 Outdoor activities like fishing, soccer, etc are easy to do and there are areas for it

#3 There is some sort of night life

#4 Friendly people

Weather is the biggest thing for me though which would stop me. I live for NJ weather from mid spring to early fall. Hands down it has to be the best out there as long as you can deal with some days with high 90s.

I do wish to take a vacation in 2014 to Portland. I'd also like to visit South Carolina and New Orleans area as well.

Question Chattanooga!?

But are they going to spoil Chatanooga like they did other places,by all ex-Californicators, New Yorkers, and Los Angelenos jamming themselves in, taking over, pushing out the natives, and turning into a yuppie mall?

California was beautiful at one time, ditto Eugene OR; what ruined it, was they let hordes of aliens(out of staters) come in, bring their s___ with them, and RUIN IT.Eugene is permanently ruined, because the local govt. let EVERYONE,& anyone, just pour in,and out of state developers bribed Lane county & Eugene govt. officials. If Tennessians, can't protect their state, and their natives, it will end up the trash heap that Eugene OR is."Diversity" "sustainability" "non-carbon foot print" "organic" "green" "progressive" " very liberal and so PC." Thousands of drugs and homeless everywhere. NON-moderate or right wing. Just EXTREME. I would not wanta see Chattanooga wind up "ultra-PC" and disgusting. (we're so liberal, we have tons of pedophiles going after our kids,)

When i was a kid,we lived in Portland, OR, for several years, it was just a little town, not a city;we had penny and nickle and dime candy at the corner store; "candy cigerettes." wax lips. The tv store had a tv in their big window, turned on to "The Howdy Doody Show", with Buffalo Bob!!so exciting!! that was the first tv show I ever saw.ha ha.My mom took a sewing class at night, my dad worked. It was NICE as a small town.

@melody daniels: stick to alcohol and occasional pot. The hallucinations they induce are not as vivid as those produced by heroin.

I wonder if people post these types of messages to keep people from moving to portland? As a portland resident I understand not wanting to let every one in on the secret. I've lived and visited all over the USA. Portland is by far one of the best cities I've ever lived in. I love this city so much I kind of don't want the wrong people to move in a ruin it. I can understand some of your post though because a hardcore gun carrying right-winged person who lives their life according to FoxNews might not love it. But if you are a person who loves a laid back city with great food, beer, great people, coast, mountains, etc portland could be perfect for you. My only regret is that I didn't spend my entire life in portland. I never want to leave.

Portland is cool because there's houses that are 175 years old (the first houses in oregon city). Portland isn't cool because it's not that diverse and it's a car city.
