Did lots of research ahead of time, made some trips, and scouted out different neighborhoods so we'd be well prepped for a rental hunt. Flew out with just what fit in luggage, stayed in an affordable hotel right on MAX that allowed us to make a two week reservation but leave whenever we wanted without penalty. Hiked around town for a few days checking out prospects currently available, narrowed down our choices, and had a lease signed in just under a week. Then we shipped over all our stuff, prepacked into boxes staged at a relative's house, using UPS. It all went pretty smoothly.

Buying a home in a city you don't know, without renting for at least a year first, is just silly.

That is sorta how I was feeling too...but was curious if anyone had done it.

We bought from out of state about four years ago. We sold our house, moved and stayed in a hotel for a few weeks while escrow went through, then physically moved in. Great decision for our family but not for everyone.

My wife and I will probably rent for a few years when we move back, and when we have a kid start really looking at school districts within Portland and the neighborhoods we would want to try to buy in. At the moment, West Moreland is looking like a good area to eventually buy in.
