I guess I should clarify that living in North Portland and commuting Vancouver is a breeze.
Actually, I live and work in Vancouver, but I'd say 95% of my social life is in Portland and lately I seem to be drawn to doing things in SE.

Last night, I thought I could leave NE (82nd and Fremont, roughly) at 5:15, have plenty of time to sit on Airport Way, cross the Glenn Jackson Bridge, cut across SR-14, grab a quick bite to eat somewhere along the way and make my 6:30 photography class in downtown Vancouver. I made it to class on time, but had to skip the part where I got food. (Luckily, I had a couple of protein bars stashed in my camera bag).

It would take you 5-10 minutes less than if you were coming from downtown. So it would still be a day trip to get there.

Hmm, OK thanks for the replies everyone. I guess I will need to traverse it myself to understand the meaning. Here is what Google Maps has.

But they use an algorithm to estimate driving times. They don't have people out there on the ground reporting in the amount of drive time. Best to rely on locals' experiences.

Okay, just to play along. Let's say Google is right and all the people on this forum are wrong. It says it takes 5 hours and 8 minutes.

You keep asking what the commute is like, which implies you plan to live in Portland and work in B.C. So, you're looking at spending 10 hours and 16 minutes every day, 5 days a week driving to and from work, along with working 8 hours a day, assuming you have no overtime ever? So 16 hours of your day are going to be spent working and driving. That leaves 6 hours to sleep and, if you want one, have a social life-likely in the middle of the night when most people are sleeping.
