I'm a 30 y.o. guy from the Bay Area, pretty much your quintessential nerd, and planning on moving to Portland early next year. This forum has been great for understanding the neighborhood dynamics, places to live, weather, etc, thanks to everyone that provided that info for the rest of us. I am, however, curious as to how the nerd/sci-fi/anime/gaming/etc social crowd is. Coming from the Bay Area, where you can't swing a cat without hitting a D&D game or a Battlestar Galactica tv party, how does Portland match up?

Well, if there is one it will likely be in Portland but my sense of it is that in the main, Oregonians like to get out in the world and experience the rain on their noses and the wind in their hair(s). Computers are cool and obviously people in Oregon own them but more as tools to access information than as a world to inhabit. YMMV.

These gamers meet at the Lucky Labrador brew pub and other places.
They can probably tell you more about the local scene.

Portland is very nerd friendly. As a former resident and full time nerd I can say social options are good. Being a nerd does not preclude one from dating but some nerd characteristics will put women off nerd girl or not. I networked with people online and through LAN Parties. I've met some super people In the Portland area. Lots of shops that cater to nerd needs in Portland. Intel and other high tech businesses create nerd density. I miss my nerd buddies in Portland.

Portlanders have a love affair with the weird, off-based, and non-mainstream. You will do just find here. Nerds rule in this town. Just set up a chess board in Pioneer Square and you'll make friends by noon. I wish you all the best.
