MAKE PORTLAND NORMAL

The counter-revolution has begun: Make Portland Normal. If you refresh the page, they have a few good one liners. My favorite: "Because putting cereal on a donut isn't weird, it's just unhealthy."

Hmm disappointing... I thought there would be more substance. I got excited for nothing.

...ah refresh.... I get it now.

My only problem with the site is that many of the pictures aren't taken in Portland. Unless we have a very authentic little Holland I'm not aware of. Some of the sayings are not amusing, I could have thought of better ones. Although, I did have to research zoo bombing and slack lining.

They really should just have forward and back arrows.

Huh… "Timbers Army" is "insanely disrespectful"?

Who thinks hybrid cars are weird?

Looks like some malcontent is trying to make some cash by selling a stupid t-shirt to other people who like to complain about everything.

A good marketing strategy is:

Drink the Kool-Aid and buy the t-shirt making fun of people who drink the Kool-Aid.

Most of the examples on that page aren't weird or specific to Portland, and a few of them just don't really make much sense. No one claims micro brewing is that weird, every other little town out in the country has their own microbrewery these days in much of the western US. Subrarus or hybrids aren't weird to anyone either.

"Because not pumping your own gas isn’t “weird”, it’s just emasculating".
Everyone knows this isn't a weird Portland thing, this is just an Oregon thing. And the fourth/fifth-generation Oregon natives will defend their right to not pump their own gas to the end. Obviously though this website wasn't created by someone from who has lived in Oregon that long.

Because hating on the west side isn’t “weird”, it’s just Soviet Bloc era ****
I've never really heard anyone on the east side seriously talk about hating on the west side of Portland in 11 years of living on the east side.

The rest of it seems to be Voodoo Donuts references, which is basically a tourist trap for visitors at this point. Keep Portland Weird is such a cliché though, that at this point it's only tourists who really think that it's something embraced by people in Portland.

Zoobombing is pretty stupid though, screw those idiots... And the Timbers Army can be annoying.

Large swaths of Portland (particularly the non-hip areas of east) are already 'normal' as are pretty much all the surrounding suburbs.

My first impression is simply to flip the message's interpretation. Make the rest of the USA so progressive and funky so as to make Portland unremarkable. Transit and hipsters and food carts and vegan options for everyone! Let's make Portland normal, indeed! Fine by me.

More hipsters would be a catch-22. If more people did it, it stops being cool, so Pdx hipsters would have to find a whole new trend.

Tats and piercings is so passe'. If you really want to be "weird", dress in a suit and tie at school. Carry your lunch in a brief case for the ultimate special effect.

I live in SE and wore the t-shirt around and most people have found it funny. Some people have different senses of humors I guess: mine is very dry. I laughed out loud the first time I saw it and had to buy a t-shirt.
