So I am a bit new to growing things in this PNW climate and I was thinking with such a nice hot summer my tomatoes would be doing great. I have a bunch of fruit but it's STILL green. Google tells me that too-hot temperatures can stop the ripening process, which I didn't realize. Silly, because I've grown them in Phoenix before. Anyway, I was wondering how many others in the Portland area have had the same issue?

The microclimate in my yard where they are located is probably the warmest spot, so I'll have to change that for next year. Live and learn, I suppose.

It was a strange year in some areas for tomatoes.

I still have some.

If you still have green ones when it gets too cold, pick 'em and bring them in. Put them in a dark place and check every couple of days. Most will eventually ripen- it can take weeks!

Did you select varieties that do well in the PNW? We do have a nice, hot summer but it's short so you have to choose quick to ripen varieties. There are several hybrids from OU or OSU and several Russian/eastern Europe varieties that do well. Standard varieties - e.g. Big Boy, etc. - don't do well here because there's not a long enough growing season.

I just picked the last of the Yellow tomatoes. Yes Yellow. They have been that way for a month. I put them in the window to ripen.

I have a few greens ones left, but overall, I had a banner tomato year.
I planted my standard Early Girl and Celebrity, and a new one I found called Oregon Spring.

If you want to have a good tomato crop, wait until the last planting minute, and buy the biggest tomato plants you can find.

Otherwise start them early and keep them warm.

We had a record tomato harvest this year. With plenty of red, yellow, and green ones remaining!
