totally, I think most people (?) would understand that as long as they arent puppies (didn't sound like they were) Great Danes are pretty mellow.
And like another poster said, if you can rent directly from a landlord and they take a shine to you and your dogs, you are in.

There are so many private homes on the East side with ADU rentals now and I am not sure where to find advertising for these rentals but you sound like the kind of tenant many landlords who live on property would want to rent to. Have you checked Madison South and Roseway areas for home rentals? Those areas are west of Gresham but generally cheaper than the trendy parts of Portland and the yards are often large.

The balance is tilting against PDX, I think. Weather, cost of living, ability to buy a suitable house instead of beg for a tenuous rental situation, and employment are all adding up on the Denver side. I've done the West Coast, I've done the East Coast... seems like time to stand in the middle for a while.

But I'm open to more arguments for continuing to look around PDX for housing and a job... I've had many people assure me I'd be a good fit for the area.

Good luck from a fellow New Englander.

Have you considered Austin, Texas? If you can stand the heat, it might be a good fit, though there could be an ageism thing there too, as it's considered a hip city. I don't know.

It's funny how many of my searches pointed to Texas, but... nope. Can't do it. I've been to Texas twice... and flew in and out on the same day, both times.

I lived decades with hot-hot Northern California summers and while that's weather I can tolerate, I'd just as soon avoid extremes in my looming old age. The one thing I did NOT expect, moving to New England, was long, hot, humid summers. After about the fourth one where 80+ degrees at 90%+ humidity persisted for days at a time (with no break overnight), I started planning to GTF out. Going someplace as hot as Sacramento and as humid as any you might name is not in the cards. Plus it's in Texas.

Denver is looking good, weatherwise. I can tolerate its brand and duration of cold in exchange for 300 days of sun and generally pleasant summers.
