I am looking for a blues bar in the Portland area where they play actual blues, it seems nowadays places call themselves a blues bar but they play anything under the sun. So anyone got any suggestions for a blues/jazz bar preferably nothing to fancy but whatever, I live in North Portland and am familiar with Mock Crest Tavern but have never been there. Thanks

I think that Jimmy Mak's, down in the Pearl is the "main" club. The Candlelight up near PSU, as well, but think they're more to the jazz side. Check out the Cascade Blues Association's website for specific events.

Our favorites are Trail's End, Cascade Bar and Grill, and Halibut's. I second the CBA, they are the center of the blues scene. Also KMHD website, for jazz.

I go to Jimmy Mak's and Wilf's for jazz, not sure about blues though. Just don't order food at Wilf's its way over priced for what it is. I feel so young when I go though, hardly anyone in their 20's. What can I say, I have great taste in music.

Holman's on 28th just off E. Burnside.

The Tillicum on Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway

Duff's garage.

Also, give the CBA "meetings" a try. 1st Wednesday of every month at the Melody Ballroom. It's free. They even give you one ticket for the drawings (free cds, sometimes t-shirts). 1st show is always an acoustic set; the next one a full band. Some months have better performances than others; however, it's something to do mid-week, no charge to get in, have a drink, and hopefully enjoy the music. The more often you go, the more you'll learn about the blues scene. You can also pick up a free copy of the CBA newsletter with the calendar for that month.

You need not be a member of CBA to attend these meetings, but in time you may want to consider it.
