LOL - well, it's only 1 game - and you can't take it for any more than that; but the Colts and Jeff Saturday shocked the league tonight :-). And those who called his hiring "a disgrace!", "the worst thing the NFL has ever done!", said that he was hired deliberately to make the Colts lose the remaining games, etc, etc will (hopefully) be a little more careful with that kind of rhetoric... just give the guy (and his team) a chance before you write them off...
LOL - well, some of them have to feel a little embarrassed I think. Like I said, it's one thing to be skeptical because he's never been a head coach - totally get that, but it's another to go on with this overheated, virulent criticism. You'd think that they hired Skip Bayless out of the ESPN stable, not Jeff Saturday ;-)
We still don't know how well it will all work out of course, but they're 1-0 with Saturday. Now the Eagles will be a different story of course, but expectations have to be reasonable. Even if Saturday does an amazing job of getting up to speed and he has great talents for the job - he's still only human. The guy needs some patience from the rest of the world at this time.
I've only watched Saturday on ESPN/Get Up but he always struck me as a pretty serious and sincere guy, and he was a decorated player, plus he's had ongoing involvement with the Colts organization, and, so far, he looks kinda like a head coach! That first game was noticeable too because you didn't see sloppy play - lots of turnovers and penalties, didn't happen. So I am rooting for the guy, he has huevos, there's no doubt about that, he does have some suitable qualities for HC, and he just seems like a good dude.
The NY Times has a sports reporting section they call "The Athletic" and this week had a gruesome story of former Colts player Jeff Herrod and how he suffers new from his years of playing "seek and destroy" football as a Middle Linebacker.
Excerpt: "His dress clothes hang idle inside the closet of his north Florida home, a dozen suits collecting dust because he can’t slip them on. Not by himself at least. He settles for athletic clothes most days, the best he can manage without his wife’s help. ... He rarely takes off his sunglasses, even when he’s inside, because light makes his 15-year-old headache scream even worse. ... “You know what it’s like living with a migraine 24 hours a day, seven days a week?” he says. ... he’ll wake up, seething and soaked in sweat, growling like a lion before the kill, pissed that it’s over and has been over for 25 years. All he’s left with is a body that’s falling apart and a mind that’s slipping away. ... He’ll have fits of crying. He’ll throw up out of nowhere. He’ll hear a horn or a siren or a buzzer and want to turn around and slug someone. He’ll scream at his wife if she cooks with the wrong colored spoon."

One of the dads in my neighborhood growing up, a successful doctor, liked a particular flavor of 'exotic' car.
He bought a new 1969 De Tomaso Mangusta. Then, when they put out the Pantera, he bought a new Pantera.
In college, he was an offensive lineman on a top 20 ranked Division 1 team.
He later suffered terribly from ALS, and died before his 70th birthday.
Well, Jeff Saturday had a storybook start to his NFL coaching career, notching a win versus the Raiders on Nov 13. Since then though, things have gotten a lot more real and they've lost 4 straight, including to the Vikings after holding a 33 point lead. The Vikings are a strong team this year, but still, that manner of losing has to be tough to take. Of course, Indy had issues before Saturday arrived, so it's not all on him, but those who may have been hoping that it was going to be an easy fix - just add Saturday, are likely reassessing now.
Sorry Colt fans, it's all too well known by now that Matt Ryan has added to his "Worst Choker" off all time legend with a yesterday's meltdown to go along with his Super Bowl collapse. But he holds the record for the worst collapse in an NFC Championship Game (17 points to the 49ers) and (because stuff like this matters I guess), the worst collapse in one of the Int'l Series games (21 points to the Lions).
It seems clear that Indy should hang on the Matty Ice as it probably would ensure a likely date with an AFC Championship Game in the near future.
He was the starting QB for the Falcons in the biggest blown lead in Super Bowl history, and was the starting QB for the Colts when they pulled off the biggest blown lead in ANY NFL game in history. So, even if Ryan retires after this year, he can put that on his resume at least.
I think at this point it is safe to say that Jim Irsay got a little too involved after Jaguar Harbor last year and it has blown up in his face. Regardless the outcome of this season, and who ever is tasked with getting the ship sailing straight, hopefully Irsay just gets out of the way and lets football people make football decisions. Jim Irsay has shown himself in the past to be a disaster when involved with GM role, and he is meddling too much these days.
