The Badger 5 is, for the price, a fine garbage disposal for an old model, or even for those who do not have a garbage disposal yet. The functionality of the Badger 5 is fine, there are no real bells or whistles, and certainly does not grind coffee for use. The Badger 5 seems to have a bit of a problem with the kinds of things one might compost.
Some of the things the Badger 5 seems to struggle on are garlic, or onion peels, potato peels. Additionally, grains don't seem to be very easy for it to deal with. Things like rice, or oatmeal can be difficult to run through the Badger 5.
The installation of the Badger 5 is relatively simple as well. The bad part of the installation is that it does not come with it's own power cord. So hopefully when installing the Badger 5, the installers will keep the power cord from the previous garbage disposal. The entire design has a feel of being slapped together and sent out before any real product testing had been done. The casing can have some problems as well. While doing any kind of real work, the Badger 5 can come apart a bit, and start leaking under the sink.
These are, however, incredibly popular garbage disposals, and with that , comes a relative ease of repair or replacement. The reset button (which tends to need to be pushed about once a week) is fairly easy to find fortunately.
The InSinkErator is difficult to beat for around $80 though. With most places, shipping online is free, and with the ease of installation, the Badger 5 is not all bad. It works well for dishwashers, or any light debris which could be caught in the sink, but does not work well under any kind of strenuous grinding, like peels.
