Review of Danby DCR412W Deluxe Mini Fridge with Freezer (cheapest, price)

Our son left for college this year and I wanted him to have a refrigerator in his dorm room to save money. I did not want the cheapest model but I also did not want to buy the most expensive, either, knowing how young people are about caring for things, especially away from home.
After reviewing several models, I purchased the Danby DCR412W Deluxe Mini Fridge, a 4.3 cf unit. Here are some of the reasons why I chose this model:
* price; not too high and not too low with a list price of $179.99
* it includes a freezer with push button defrost
* the dimensions are reasonable for a dorm room at 22.5 x 22 x 35 inches
* it comes with a 5-year warranty on the compressor
* it offers the CanStor beverage holder in the door
I did not want to spend money on a refrigerator that would not hold anything, and I thought the smaller 2 and 3 cubic foot units were just too small. I did not want anything much larger than the Danby 4.3 cubic foot unit because it might be too heavy to move easily.
One thing my son commented on is how quiet the Danby is. His roommate told him having a compact refrigerator would be great in the room but was concerned it would make too much noise when trying to study. That is not a problem with this model.
He also mentioned the adjustable shelves being a convenience. The freezer is not that great, but most freezers in these smaller units are not designed to be the main feature of the unit anyway, but it does keep foods frozen and it makes ice sufficiently.
Another problem with the unit is the red defrost button. It is an attraction for some, especially kids (including college aged ones), to push the button and before anyone notices, the unit has defrosted. My son's solution to this was an adhesive label to deter this occurrence.
It is sized perfectly so you can add a small microwave on top and eat meals and snacks in your room. My son says this is very handy when studying for exams and tests and not wanting to leave for meals.
So far, we've had no trouble with the unit and it has performed everything it was designed to do without incident. It cools as it should, the freezer performs adequately, and we are very happy with the purchase.
