This has bothered me for a long time, and tonight I decided to see if someone has a viable answer to my question.
When women are surprised, or are overjoyed at receiving a gift, or have some unexpected occasion, why do they ALWAYS cover their mouth with their hands?
I just finished watching wheel of fortune, and the women contestant won a great deal of money.
The first thing she did was to cover her mouth with her hands.
Why do women do this?
Men never do.
Bob.
Men never do???? Apparently you’ve never been to San Francisco .
I do it. Usually when I hear some upsetting news, and maybe I'm about to cry. My mouth is closed, so it's nothing to do with teeth!! I can picture my Mom doing it, so I'm guessing I learned it from her.
This. If men don't cover their mouths when they're wide open, I guess it's because they're boors?
Seems like men are not socialized with as MUCH emphasis on manners, these days anyway. I don't know. I taught my boys to cover their mouth when they yawn but maybe I am in the minority? Maybe no one is being taught stuff like this anymore?
probably they saw it on Friends... like air kissing, false hugs and fanning their faces with their hands...like their having a Victorian swoon....
Great posting! The 'fanning their hands' bit to supposedly cool themselves is something I don't understand since it in no way cools their face. . . it's just a fad thing.
When a women cries, some believe it makes them look unattractive so they cover their face with their hands. When they laugh some feel the same way, and others just go ahead and laugh without covering their face.
But then we'd be clasping our hands somewhere else when we're shocked, not our faces!
