There is a passage in Albert Camus' The Stranger that always inspired me. Re-reading it now, it might come across as a little depressing but I suppose I interpreted it as realizing one's ability to accept, and to continue in an unchangeable situation. It takes place when the protagonist is adapting to life behind (real) bars:
"Afterward, I had prisoner’s thoughts... I’ve often thought that had I been compelled to live in the trunk of a dead tree, with nothing to do but gaze up at the patch of sky just overhead, I’d have got used to it by degrees. I’d have learned to watch for the passing of birds or drifting clouds... Well, here, anyhow, I wasn’t penned in a hollow tree trunk. There were others in the world worse off than I. I remembered it had been one of Mother’s pet ideas—she was always voicing it—that in the long run one gets used to anything."

But, this is a good idea for a thread!
There is a quote that has stuck with me through the years and I really enjoy it.
"It is the greatest of all mistakes to do nothing because you can only do little -- do what you can." - Sydney Smith
It has been most useful to me in my lifelong effort to protect the environment. I believe this can be applied to many other aspects in life regarding making a difference.
