To me, burning marijuana is one of the worst smells on Earth, right down there with burning hair, rotten food, and the fumes from a vacuum truck emptying a grease trap. it's even worse than morning breath, stink bombs, skunks, ferrets, wet dog, rotting flesh, litterboxes, used gear oil, sewage treatment plants, paper mills, feedlots, H2S, sulfur, spent caustic, and nitromethane.

OTOH, I love some smells that most people don't: horses, diesel exhaust, a fully-loaded cattle truck, the exhaust from a methanol-fueled race car, the smell of freshly-popped fireworks, and Hoppe's #9 gun oil.

Sweaty children's heads, baby powder and puppy breath - such sweet memories from all of those!

Am I the only person who can smell a distinct scent on someone when they come in from outside on a cold day?

I know exactly what you mean! Cold Man Smell. For whatever reason, I can only smell it on men, though.

Bactine Antiseptic spray, Murphy's Wood Oil Soap & Bookstores.

I like the smell of the forest floor, in the Rocky Mountains.

The Vaseline from the 1970's (not this new whatever it is) & old office buildings downtown (pre-1950's).

they say the sense of smell is the sense most closely related to memory....

and i do think most of us will get triggers just like the one you mentioned,,,,

i once read when we remember something, we are actually recalling the last time we remembered it ...not the actual time it happened...
not sure if i believe this..
Nah...I'm not believing that either. We may have a remembrance of where were when we caught wind of the smell to take us back, but those times are all a time of their own. I think we're still recalling the original time.

Funny how many others have mentioned OLD skunk smell. I love it too. Our dog growing up lived outside all summer and he was skunked weekly (at least). Kibble was left on a ledge for the cats, in retrospect i know that is what drew the skunks.

Fresh skunk could make me wish I hadn't been born, but old skunk reminds me of that age and time. If I drive by it I smile.

Also from close to that time is gas on snow. I don't like the smell of gas, unless it is around 0F, it reminds me of when we had an old jeep without much floor left, and snowmobile was the only way to get to the house (I was under the age of 10).
