I strongly suspect that I have suffered from abuse by a covert narcissist and his enablers. The words they have said to me have deeply hurt me. The covert narcissist I dealt with tried to convince other people that I'm crazy. He would frequently say things like "it's not that I don't like you, or that you're crazy, I just don't like how your mind interprets things." He would constantly, and I mean CONSTANTLY, tell me that I misinterpret everything he says and does. And eventually, when I tried to quietly leave him and the group of friends, one of the enablers publicly called me out in a chat of 20+ people, and while trying to be "caring," he told me that I need therapy "for the way [my] mind interprets things." You're basically telling me that my brain is wired in a way that I am delusional and my reality is distorted and that everything my brain suggests is wrong. How could you do that to someone?

And since then, I have not gone to a therapist. Even though I do need one for this PTSD, for my massive anxiety, my social anxiety and phobia, my depression... etc. etc. Because in my mind, if I see a therapist, that means they were right. That I'm crazy.

OMG, see a therapist. Just do it. Seeing a therapist does not mean you're crazy.

I'm the daughter of a mother who is at the very least a narcissist but quite possibly something else. She had me entirely snowed for the first 40 years of my life. I don't have PTSD from it, but I do struggle with anxiety and depression and yes that has occasionally rendered me delusional. I've gone down some crazy rabbit holes.

You need a therapist to help you sort through these things - what's real, what's not. And they can also help you develop a methodology for doing that real time when you feel yourself starting to fall apart.

Calm down. Go on Psychology Today's website, find a therapist who fits your needs and make an appointment. You will be happy you did.

Words hurt if you allow them to.
How is it that you cannot just walk away from this group?
Are you being forced to spend time with them?
Either walk away and cut all contact
or
continue to voluntarily be treated as you are.
Your choice.

I think your friends are concerned about you and would like you to get professional help. But you choose to see it as an insult.

It's people like you who perpetuate the stigma around mental illness, which can actually kill people. Ask me how I know.

You've started several threads talking about how your mental health is affecting your relationships and your work, so deep down you do know he has a point. You really do need to get over the stigma about seeking help for your mental health. If you have a pain with your tooth that affects the way you eat, you go see a dentist. If you have a problem with anxiety and depression that affects the way you interact with the world, you go see a therapist. Seek a specialist who can treat your condition, there's no problem with it.

Seeing a therapist is not a foregone conclusion that you're crazy/insane. Many people use the services of therapy to help them sort out things and put them into perspective.

As far as the 20+ group of people you were with, that's a pretty large gathering for chatting; and unless everyone is silent while one person talks, you're going to have multiple conversations going on at once. And how large of an area would you be seated in? Or would everyone just be standing around in a room casually talking?

Would really need more specifics about what the topic of conversation is that the narcissistic individual and enablers are discussing and what your interpretation was of the subject matter.

Maybe you're just with the wrong group? Not everyone fits in with every group.

I know I need to see one, but not because my brain is wired in a way where I misinterpret everything someone says and does. I need to see one for my massive anxiety. There was a point where I was going crazy from the mental abuse I was undergoing but I'm past that.

I apologize if I made it seem that way, but ultimately it's not the case. I know for a fact that it wasn't "caring concern."

I did end up "walking away" but I chose to stay with this group that was no good for me because I convinced myself that they were family and that I loved them and etc. etc. and turns out they weren't very good friends at all.

And yet, you have tons of people telling you that you tend to misinterpret what they are trying to tell you.

Are you right and they are all wrong?

That's not very logical. People hardly ever agree with each other to that extent, unless there is undeniable truth in it.

You are not the sole possessor of the facts, only your own perceptions, and they are clouded by the illnesses you claim.
