It's definitely more Midwest Rochester and west. The further west, the more of a Midwestern vibe there is. The way people speak also changes. Where are you now?

Oh I can see that! I was born and raised Upstate. Lived somewhere Upstate except 2.5 miserable years. I don't even like visiting Downstate. It's not my thing. A VERY different vibe down there. Upstate and Downstate are like 2 different worlds!

I can't relate to this personally, but when my aunt and uncle went south after 35+ years in New England, my aunt immediately began to refer to their new location as "home." I think this annoys her adult children, two of whom have their own kids now, as whenever their parents visit nowadays they seem to be in quite the rush to get back "home."

My husband is a NYC native born and raised with his family from there for generations, so although he's been here in the Bay Area for a decade, he still cheers for the Mets over the Giants.
