Best: Earning my Master’s degree. For the last year of my program, I completed the degree while working 50-55 hours a week. I was drained for energy throughout. I even lost a relationship over it. But turning in that final paper, I knew I did something that tested me and kicked it’s a$&. All the people who thought all I’d ever be was a degenerate ahole were made liars that day. It felt like I climbed the biggest mountain in the world.
Worst: Watching my father die. Our relationship was very rough. Just the fact of knowing there would be no more chances for us to be cool as he slipped away was heartbreaking. I did say I love him as my final words to him. I to this day have dreams about him where we were cool and drinking beer and eating together. The worst part is waking up and reliving that day on his deathbed to realize he is gone.
Best moment: October 27, 1997, turning the fastest laptops of my life at the best track day of my life, Buttonwillow raceway in Buttonwillow CA. On my Gixxer 750. I was fastest guy at the track that day, for first and last time. The instructor who was interested in working with me (more like, "competing") could not keep up by the last couple sessions. I had turned 30 not long before, the weather was perfect too. Definitely in the running for "best" motorcycle I ever owned, 1995 (new) to sold to some idiot as a street bike in 2001 for $.40 on the dollar. Bet it's still running.
Worst moment: returning from the hospital with my dad when my mom was terminal, and had suffered a second catastrophic stroke related to end-stage pancreatic cancer. BTW, if you ever get that, toward the end when looks like you won't make it stick a Colt 1911 in your .... I'll leave it there, as probably the least-painful way out of the (only two remaining) options at that point. Word to the wise.
