I don't even think that's a hug. I've tried at one point or another these last seven years during all of my medical scares and the separation from my family. It's not the same thing for me. If it is for you, that's great though.
The closest I come is hugging my pillow (I'm a stomach sleeper). That is not a self-comforting move unless I'm super tired or happen to be ill, though. And even then it's ... meh.
For me, someone expressing some kind of caring is sufficient, hug or not.
For me, the one great thing about the COVID pandemic is, hugging is outlawed, so I haven't even been hugging myself – of course I have never thought of doing it, because I don't like hugging in any form.
This thread keeps reminding me of that trick kids used to pull where you turn your back to someone and hug yourself to make it look like you were making out with someone. Kids are so stupid.
