Sometimes I think participating in forums is kind of like jumping into a mosh pit. If you jump into a forum, it's possible you will get your feelings hurt. If you jump into a mosh pit, there's a chance you're going to get hurt. Yet, people do it. For fun. For entertainment. For intellectual (mostly) stimulation.
I feel like at the end of the day, it's up to us as individuals if we need a break or not. It's pretty hard to regulate other people's personalities, so participate or not...but the choice is entirely up to the individual.
CD does a better than fair job of moderating...which some people don't appreciate...but "dem's the rules" so I take that at face value.
To the OP, you might enjoy reading a book by Dr. Jonn Mumford called The Karma Manual. He has 9-days of exercises in it, which seem to be what you're trying to achieve. For 9 days, no bad news, no complaining or gossiping, no arguing, etc. It goes deeper into all sorts of things, but it's a good read & you might enjoy it. You can probably find it at your library.
For some people, online argument is a way to vent their aggression. I started on the CBC forums, www.cbc.ca/forums (after a brief spell on Suzuki). I became friendly with a garrulous and argumentative Canadian poster. I met him and his wife for dinner in Fort Lee, New Jersey when the two of them came to clean out the wife's father's apartment. This was in July 2004. The guy could not have been more mellow, and unlike his online presence. We had become friendly because we both believed (and I still believe) that "climate change" is a Grade A fraud.

It is a good read, I agree. My wife bought it some time ago and we both really liked it.
