I'm going to be moving to SW Florida for an unpaid Internship in January. I'm looking for something fairly cheap as the position is unpaid and likely will be for about 9 months tops. Ideally I would like to get something furnished as I will not be able to bring any furniture from Michigan. I have had trouble finding anything with decent reviews or anything on Craig's List in the area. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

What do you mean by "fairly cheap?"

Last year the only furnished place I found for under $1,500 in January was a run down RV on Burnt Store Road, which is why I rented a room in a private home for a few months. It's not ideal, but that is probably the best way to go temporarily, since you won't have to commit to a lease and can leave if you're not happy. Then, when the snowbirds leave in April, you can usually find a furnished rental for around $800.

I live in Port Charlotte and would not advise you to rent an apartment sight unseen. It's a nice, quiet city, but there are some "iffy" areas and, as the expression goes, you get what you pay for.

Have you checked with the YMCA or YWCA. maybe they can help you find a place or you can stay there till you find something suitable.
Good luck

There isn't a YWCA in the area and the YMCAs there do not take overnight guests.

We do have a YMCA in Charlotte County. They don't take overnight guests, however.

Sorry, but I guess there are several rentals for less.

I just found a list of rentals in the area. I don't think I can post a link to a real estate agency, and I haven't seen them, but there are many rentals advertised for $500 a month in good areas. It would make sense to rent one of them and buy your own furniture. Believe me, in this economy you can do that very cheaply. I know we're always reading stories about bed bugs, but I don't know anyone who bought used furniture and ended up with bugs. Anyway, I don't know how current this is or if the link will be removed, but there are many inexpensive rentals listed here. Hmm...looks like renting is better than buying in this market. Good luck. I hope you enjoy your stay in SWFL.

There are plenty of rooms for rent on craigs list, some are furnished and some not. You would want to see photos and communicate with the homeowner frequently to get an idea about who they are of course. Most apartments want a yearly lease to be signed so going with a room rental would be your best choice i'd think.

I street viewed the first $500 apartment and the area doesn't even look bad!

Nancy, you do realize that you wrote almost the same thing in post 5 that I wrote in post 4, right?
