It has been my dream of living in Florida - I know it is not for everyone - but I have visited many times and just love hot weather, beaches, low key lifestyle - and dont mind the bad stuff like bugs, hurricanes, etc. -

Now that my husband has an interview in Punta Gorda - I am very excited - We are pushing 50 but still have small kids since we had them late - so we have to worry about schools - so what I am saying is that we have thought it through and it is not our first rodeo - I am just wondering what this particular area of Florida is known for and how life really is - the good and the bad.

My heartfelt appreciation for everyones opinions -

Default mosquitoes

Are there areas of PC that have a less mosquito problem than others? We will be looking at property in PC next month and this is an important factor as they are really hard on my wife.
Thanks,
Jake

Places that have standing water such as a pond, lake, canal, river, etc. will have more mosquitos than if you live in an area with no water. Most people have a screened lanai on the back of their home and you just go in there when you want to still be enjoying the outdoors but the mosquitos are too bad. We don't see nearly the amount mosquitos here in Port Charlotte as we did up north in New York.

Mosquitoes aren't so much an issue, it's the tiny gnats/noseeums, whatever you want to call them. They get through the screens and if they bite before you swat them, it's worse than a mosquito bite. Don't think you can really avoid them anywhere. Even a slight breeze will keep them at bay, however. We use a fan outdoors on the lanai in the summer and don't have a problem.

Best - laid back lifestyle, plenty of shopping and restaurants, beautiful parks, events, boating

Worst - even though surrounded by water, neither PC nor PG is a beach town, also much of Charlotte County is low-lying and may cost you more for flood insurance

Plenty of restaurants, yet it's almost impossible to get a seat during "season" without waiting 1/2 hr or more.

I really like that Port Charlotte has everything you need in one place--all the restaurants and shopping you could possibly want. I moved here from a small town, so that's been a big plus for me! I like that you can drive through both towns and feel safe, even if you get lost. While some areas are older and more "run down" than others, you can typically feel safe. Onto that issue--while our neighborhood is safe I do wish it was better kept up. Definately take the time to look around and find the right area to live before you move in. Unless you live in a deed restricted community some people tend to be slobs--not all, but some.

Honestly the bugs aren't a big issue. I thought the mosquitos were worse back in IL! I was suprised to find that the bugs aren't that bad. Love bugs were really bad a couple years ago when we first moved here, but they seem to be SO much better this year! If you live by water then, of course, you're going to see more bugs!

If you're planning on living in Punta Gorda you're going to love it there. That town is beautiful! Great landscaping and parks and a lot of the downtown area is newer and they have adorable little farmer's markets on the weekend. It WOULD be nice if the beach was closer, but beggars can't be choosers!! It is overall a nice community.

After moving here from the cold winters I couldn't imagine ever going back! No state income tax and our house taxes are MUCH lower than they were in rural Illinois! Definately get on the homestead tax exemption if you're going to live here full time! We never thought Florida would be affordable for us. We thought it would be only a dream until we actually considered it and started doing research. You'll love it here! Good luck!

FYI, love bug season hasn't begun yet. Generally not until April. I have seen a couple here and there, but just wait.... they'll be here. Last year wasn't bad.
I 2nd Traveler's comment above about moving from the cold and highly taxed. Same here (W. Michigan) 3.5 yrs ago. We miss people, but won't ever move back. We just fly back 2-3 times per year to visit (warm months ONLY!!!) Never dreamed we would be in our 30s owning waterfront property in FL!!! Definitely very fortunate

That's what I mean--last year wasn't bad. I didn't see hardly any last year. The previous year was terrible though!!
