Florida has a 6% sales tax.

Counties may add 1% based upon voter approval.

About 6 years ago the voters of Charlotte County approved the 1% increase.

However this time the county has decided to make the time span 8 years if the voters approve the 1% increase. Which is not sitting well with some.

Lee County only has a 6% sales tax.

The counties in Florida are looking for more revenue. Can you really fight a 1% increase? I personally don't think 1% is not asking a lot. It is just another cost of doing business, imo. In the end, we all will pay one way or another.....

I certainly will not approve. You may think 1% is not asking a lot, but we have property taxes which are supposed to pay for the various services. Drop my property tax 1% and then I might think about it

It is NOT a 1% increase!!! I wish people would stop calling it that. It is a 16.67% increase over the standard 6% tax. BUT, 1% sounds A LOT better to our ears than 16.67%, so that's how they get us to vote for it. And they sure get lots of local lobbyists on board, because THEIR projects benefit from the revenue! It's ONE MORE UNNECESSARY TAX our wasteful county commission levies on it's citizens. They have NO CLUE how to cut back on spending! When they want more money, they come up with a new tax or raise existing taxes. No matter how much the gov't gets, they will ALWAYS want more!

I'm not a full time resident yet so I don't have a vote.

But after reading the list of the things that the money has been used for I would vote for the extension.

I voted for it last time it was on the ballot and my reasoning was since we do not have a state income tax funding needs to come from someplace and also that tourists pay sales tax too.

However two things bother me about this vote.

One is the extension to make it 8 years. Why?

Second, is some of the projects seem not to be truly needed. Like the expansion of the county courthouse that is not using all it's space even yet. Also the fact that the old or as some call it the "historic" courthouse (that is younger than some of our residents) is available and is hardly used up to it's square footage potential.

We have miles of sidewalks to nowhere on country roads in this county as you see on Airport Rd.

I guess my point is that politicians will never control their spending and if they do not have needed projects will spend it anyway on something not needed just to keep the $ from getting away from them.

Mike, maybe I presented it in a bad way.

It was re-affirmed by vote about 6 years ago. You are right it had been 7% before that because of a previous vote.
