Good afternoon. Please tell me a little about the fishing opportunities on the west coast. How is the North Port, Port Charlotte area for fishing. How is the Tarpon, Red, Bass fishing specifically. Is their brackish water in the area? I know the east coast has the Indian River/Mosquito Lagoon. Is their anything like this on the west coast? Are their many bass lakes in the area? Finally, would you say the east, or west coast has better fishing opportunities? Thanks in advance for the infomation.

Charlotte Harbor has very good fishing. I fish for tarpon, and the big boys will be here sooon. We have a year round population but May through October is truly great.

Up river the peace river the water sweetens up and largemouth can be found. While I don't fish the freshwater canals in NP and PC I hear the bass can get big.

Pine Island Sound and Gasparilla sound will have good numbers of reds and trout.

I've never fished the east coast, never felt the need to search outside of the local waters.

Well, I don't exactly qualify as a fisherman but I was born and raised in SW Florida and have fished the local waters a lot.

North Port-anything east of US 41 would not have gulf access and you would mostly find bass. West of US 41 the water gets more salty and you would find snook, redfish, trout, flounder, sheepshead(mostly around the pilings) and mullet(which are vegetarians and have to be caught with a cast net).

Today my middle daughter went canoing down the Myakka River and saw hundreds of baby flounder. I wasn't aware they liked the brackish water of the river but I guess I was wrong.

Port Charlotte-you can catch many different kinds of fish in PC. The most common fish are: Flounder, Redfish, Snook, Lane Snapper, Mangrove Snapper, Yellowtail Snapper, Red Grouper, King Mackerel, Gag Grouper, Cobia, Sea Trout, Pompano, Permit. Many of the various kinds of Grouper, Mackerel, Cobia, Pompano prefer deeper water and rocks so you probably wouldn't catch them off the dock.

Englewood- The Tom Adams Bridge in Englewood is a great place to snag some good fish. When I was a kid we used to go over there with Q-Beam light and shine them in the water and scoop the shrimp up as tide tide was going out.

I don't know anything either about fishing the other coast so I can't really provide a comparison.

SoFLGal, you're too kind! I probably would have offered to bait your hook for you, but then be totally out fished and utterly embarrassed! Because I've read some of your other posts about fishing! You know a ton, and have more experience than a lot of people that consider themselves good "fishermen."

I hope someday, I can see you reel 'em in! You're mom has to come too! I know she's really knowledgeable too!

Kbuild Nice Fish! Bluegill are easy to catch, and make a great fish fry. They are a member of the bass family. Gotta watch out for those bony little fins though! Ouch! They'll get cha!
