Thanks all. My problem is that "sales" is often confused with "marketing". I design marketing materials and promotional stuff to back up the sales people. I can't sell. And I'm afraid to start my own business because I can't sell myself either. I'd rather be a behind-the scenes person.
I can promote the hell out of a business, and do it on a shoestring, if necessary. I don't care about commissions - just give me a salary (it's safer, I'd starve!).
And I'm trying to make the leap from corporate to public sector/nonprofit. More meaning behind what you're promoting.
I think you need to start making a list of companies that you might like to work for. Perhaps in the same industry as your last job. There are plenty of places to look - forbes, fortune, cnn, hoovers on-line, local papers, etc. In non-profit, what things are you interested in? Conservation, child care, politics, cancer research, animal care, whatever - make a list of those non-profits that work in your areas of interest. It may mean that you have to move elsewhere, but only you can decide which is more important - meaningful work or the place where you live. Sometimes those two things don't always come together.
grifter's right; you need to take aim at specific sectors and companies then make your dream job happen.
alternatively, set up your own pr/marketing practice targeting those same companies. I can partner with you and help you sell it. If you want to discuss that, message me.
I have a couple of websites that people have given me, for recruiters. I can't post them on here but if you want them, just send me a msg. and I'll give them to you. A few have been mentioned on here but some of them I've never heard of. However, since I don't do recruiting, why would I have heard of them?!!
Happy to share! And no, I don't expect you to buy a house from me for this freebie!!!
I had heard that the RBC Center (where concerts and conventions are held) is looking for help.
That was about 2 weeks ago but, I would still look.
They might not have an event planning position available but maybe you can start in a different department and work you way up.
Also contact the local CVB (Convention & Visitor Bureau) &/or Chamber, they might have a lead or two. Also, try to attend (if they are free) any local Business After Hours (can find them on any Chamber's web site), you will meet a bunch of people. If you do not want to go on your own, ask a friend to go with you. Or better yet, ask to "tag along" with a friend that is a Chamber member.
I moved to Raleigh, in 2000, and it took me about 1.5 years to find the right position.
I do believe, it's not what you know but who you know...
