I'm relocating from Ohio to Raleigh, N.C for graduate school this summer and I have to make the move blind, which is proving to be difficult. I am currently looking at two properties: one on Alston St. and one on N. State St. I was wondering if anyone had any information regarding either of these locations, especially concerning the safety of the neighborhoods. I don't have a lot of time to secure information & housing, so any help will much appreciated! Thanks!

Which school? What's your gender? Do you plan on moving in with a roommate or alone by yourself? Is it a house or apartment?

Personal opinions:
- I would not move to Alston St.
- I would not move to N. State St either.

Those are both more urban neighborhoods in downtown Raleigh. I've never driven by Alston, but the I drive through N. State St. all the time, and it's fine by me. Part of N. State Street goes through College Park and the other through Capitol Heights. Both of which are up and coming neighborhoods and just fine by me and my wife. If you're looking for an acre of land (Johnston County) or for a house in the 'burbs (Cary or North Raleigh), these two houses probably don't fit. However, if you like fringe neighborhoods on the verge of something great, I'd definitely look at N. State St first. That's just my opinion.
