any college sport - heels all of the way!

People are VERY into college sports (as in when you have a wedding in the fall everyone has to check the football schedule first!)

Pro sports just are not the thing here, although the hurricanes have turned things around a bit)

Many people here pull for the panthers and the redskins.....

You know.....there are State fans around as well....lol. You talk college....most of our friends think State...but that could just be that most are alums.

Believe me I know there are state fans out there, my husband is one of them. We met at state (he was undergrad I was in grad school), but when you grow up in chapel hill you cannot pull for any other team!

I realized very quickly how much state fans hate carolina............just about as much as carolina fans hate duke!

We have one of those "house divided" rugs............our children know the carolina and state fight songs and our 5 year old keeps telling us we don't need to argue about which team is better we can just like them both!

One of my husbands good friends said, when she found out we were dating, "I cannot believe you are actually dating a carolina fan. We all hope this is just a fling, because I couldn't love someone who pulled for carolina".

People take the college basketball very seriously around here!

I was at Devine's during the first or second Duke vs Carolina game, and someone at the bar cheered loudly when Carolina took the lead, and a fight almost broke out. Very seriously is an understatement. I've never been to a Duke game, and probably will never go to one. I just can't justify standing outside for hours for a ticket. I guess I'll never understand the fervor that some of the other Dukies have for college basketball.

So...college level football games are not child friendly to attend? Our major college football was the Air Force Academy...games there were very family friendly.

Not sure where you got that idea....it's just heated rivalries...not an unsafe environment.

The almost 'fight' mentioned in the bar took place at a bar.

Not at all. While people strongly support their teams (and love to talk trash whenever possible), they almost universally do so in a civilized manner.

For example, I was at the ACC basketball tournament a few years ago when Duke (my alma mater) was playing UNC (our most hated rival). Duke won the game, and afterwards nearly every UNC fan we met would say "congratulations".

This is serious college basketball territory! It gets very exciting, so much you will forget about pro sports.
