We looked at homes in both neighborhoods during our search. We liked both. There were sections of Lochmere that had very 70's style homes in them that I did not care for but other than that it had such great things to offer. We made an offer on a home in there 2 minutes to late and it got snatched from under us. In MD we looked at two homes which at the time were about the only 2 homes listed in there. One backed up close to the 64 so too noisy and the other did not have the lay out we needed with our kids (4th bedroom was way up in the attic with no bath) so we had to pass. Sometimes when I drive through either one of these neighborhoods I think maybe we should have rented and waited for the perfect house to come on market there. But who knows if we would have ever found that and we could have still been waiting I do think after living here a bit that Lochmere might have a slightly better advantage locations wise than MD. Getting out of MD onto the 64 can be quite busy.
Iit would seem MacGregor has a nicer course/more upscale, but is this perception accurate? And also which is the better course? I know that this will be opinion only. thanks.

Since I have never hit a ball off short grass, but have become a budding forester in my inglorious golf career, I cannot give a full answer.
As Microsoft likes to ask when I am pulling my hair out:
"Did you find this answer helpful?"

This is not even comparable. Macgregor has a far superior course to Lochmere. Macgregor has hosted professional events and also hosts college events. Davis/Jack/Arnold/Phil/Duva and othersl have all played at Macgregor. They are currently redoing all there greens/tee boxes and is shutdown until August.
I agree that the golf courses are not at all in the same league. McGregor is private and upscale, whereas Lochmere is semi-private and has somewhat of a reputation for less than pristine conditions.
The McGregor CC and golf course compares favorably with any of the upscale private courses in the region.
on less than "pristine" conditions at Lochmere golf course. In other words is it a cow pasture?
I wouldn't say it is a 'cow pasture'. But I would consider it a second tier semi-private golf course. The first tier semi-private golf courses would include Heritage, The Neuse, River Ridge, and Eagle Ridge. I would compare Lochmere more to Hedingham, Falls Village, or Riverwood.
Choosing between these 2 neighborhoods is difficult.
Here is my tie breaker - if you don't mind doing updates to homes, I think Mac Gregor is just slightly a better investment.
Why? Because of the new homes that they are building in there! The people building these new homes are investing a lot of money in that subdivision which says a lot about that neighborhood.
In the end, it really is a matter of finding a home for sale that you like in either of the subdivisions....
