Then you will succeed in the Triangle. I know Gaffney. My dad lives in Columbia (my paternal family is all from VA/SC). Raleigh is much bigger, and adding the other cities and towns in the area makes for a huge offering of just about any political/social/religious/economic milieu that you might want.

$850 should get you a pleasant 1 bedroom just about anywhere you want it as far as I can tell. I had some guys from rural TN come out from ATT to bury my phone cable last week and they were totally freaked out by the "city" (I live in Morrisville), saying it was way too urban for them. I've lived in Boston, Atlanta, Tampa, DC, and other cities, so to me the Triangle offers a nice mix of slow pace and urban amenities.

Yep, I know Gaffney pretty well, being a Spartanburger myself. I think previous posters are accurate -- you'll find the Triangle area to be more liberal and tolerant and more expensive. Downtown Raleigh is really fun, and it'll seem like more of a "real city" to you. $850 is doable for a 1 bedroom. It won't be luxury, but it'll be nice.

Every time I go home to visit my dad in Spartanburg, I can't get out of that place fast enough. It makes me realize how spoiled we are here. Upstate SC is sooooo provincial in its thinking, has a realievely low educational level, and is way too conservatively Protestant. It feels like I'm stepping back to 1985 every time I go there. The only thing worth going home for, besides Dad, is a big a**ed Hash-A-Plenty from the Beacon!!

I love the Beacon, that is the only thing I'm going to miss about the upstate lol
