I agree with everything you say- I've been looking too but Hillsborough is definitely too far from Raleigh for me and really, too small. I live alone and need interaction and while quaint, I didn't see a lot of cultural things to do for a single girl. I think that Chapel Hill is too small to get away from a University that Big! It's a college town, so I too am looking at Carborro; however, I do still expect to run into students and that is why I cannot believe the cost of homes there! That is the only reason holding me back from Apex, the groovy little town that I think would be perfect but their pricy pre-fab neighborhoods have priced me out! Holly Springs wants to be Cary and I'm not pre-fab. I'm looking all the way over to Fuquay Varina and everything in between those 2.

Wow, that was an old thread. Funny to read back on it and how it worked out. For awhile we thought the move was off and then out of the blue they told us they were closing his office in three months' time. Overall, Southern Village has been a decent place to live with both pros and cons. It's not a perfect fit. Whenever I drive around Chapel Hill or Carrboro I still look at neighborhoods to see if there is another place we'd like better. So far nothing else has totally jumped out at me. I still like Hillsborough a lot but am not sorry we didn't move there, although there are now 146 Asians who live there according to C-D stats!
Before I moved here I really thought I would take advantage of the bus system, but I hate to admit that I have only taken the bus one time in almost 2 years! I walk to many things within Southern Village like school, the gym, Weaver Street Market and the movie theatre. But if I go into Carrboro or anywhere else, I unfortunately hop in the car. The hills here have been a big detriment to me walking more and biking. I am going to work on that.
Overall, Chapel Hill and Carrboro have been an OK place to live. I don't love it here like many other people seem to. It's funny how my initial impression of the place never really changed. My kids are mostly happy here, though and my husband's job is good, so we're staying for now.
I think Southern Village is a good choice, if a little... sanitized. It's not really well connected to the bus system though, is it? Unfortunately I don't find the buses here very useful unless you are going to or from campus. Those statues on top of the cinema are creepy aren't they... they look like they're about to jump.

Hah, that's a great word for it - sanitized! It's definitely like living in the Truman Show. There are definitely buses that come through here on Culbreth Rd and at Southern Community Park's Park and Ride, but the couple times I looked at the schedule they didn't seem to be going where I wanted to go. Maybe one of these days when I have nothing to do, I will ride around on it just for fun.
Hmm...I like the statues on the cinema. I'll have to look again to see if it seems like they are going to jump.
