Umstead is great; we hike it with the kids in backpacks a lot.

The Durham Farmer's Market is lots of fun for kids, especially in the parks next door. Durham Farmers Market

We're hoping to find somewhere to pick blackberries. Some options for that are here: Central North Carolina Pick-Your-Own Farms - Where to Find Them!

Default Outside Fun

Take the Wake Co. loop of the biking trail on the Atlantic Tobacco Trail-it starts off Hwy 64 in Apex and goes 1 mi in one direction or 8 mi in the opposite. The trail is wide, easy/flat and very safe for families- one man last weekend had one of those rigs that you pull your baby behind.(attached to the bike).
Take them to Pullen Park if they are too young to bike-many good things for kids there. The fairgrounds flea market might be not so fascinating to the kids (unless there are puppies for sale) but you can take em for ice cream afterwards!
A day trip to the waterpark in G-Boro if they are old enough to go in the kiddie pool.
Have fun!

I would check parkgeek.com. You can sign up for a weekly e-newsletter listing tons of free stuff to do in area parks.

I thought it was supposed to rain???

I have been on weather.com looking at the beaches, the zoo, Emerald Pointe, etc trying to find SOMEWHERE that its not going to storm on Saturday. So far, no such luck.

I second the lake! Especially for kids. Bring a cooler, some sand toys and a good book, you're set for the afternoon.

I took sailing lessons at Lake Crabtree (in sun fishes), and it was a lot of fun. That's also an idea for the person looking for things teens might enjoy; they have a teen sailing program:
