I think that's what I need. My front window unexpectedly cracked, untouched by anyone or anything, and there's what might be a crack in the foundation visible near the base of the house on that side. I refuse to give into my panic that the house is sinking until someone with actual knowledge tells me that's what's going on.
Does anyone know exactly what sort of expert I should call in, and possibly have recommendations for said expert? I'm in Hope Valley Farms, in Durham.

Thanks.

You have "expansive clay soil" in that area and foundation cracks are a common occurence when the soil is dry for long periods of time, then suddenly saturated like what happened last week. The clay expands with the moisture which shifts the foundation footing. There is definitely movement with the symptoms you outlined. Can you post pictures of the foundation crack and adjacent areas?
I would recommend Jeffrey J. Moss P.E. - as he is extremely knowledgeable and not only a structural engineer, but a professional engineer as well.
