So many of us love our area of the triangle and it is fun to read recommendations and even bashing of other places. But I was wondering where folks would live if they didn't have to worry about price and/or commute.

Some places I would live (in no particular order): Inside the beltline and downtown neighborhoods around St Mary's Street/Oakwood/Cowper/Fairview Drive, Chapel Hill, maybe a downtown Raleigh condo, one of the nice older homes in downtown Cary but only if money were truly no object and I could pay to have them fixed up the way I wanted :-). I've also seen some really nice older, downtown neighborhoods in Durham I would live in but I don't know what they are called!

I'd still be right here.

I would probably pick a gorgeous fully restored older (circa early 1900 - 1930) home in ITB - in the area of Hayes-Barton, Anderson Heights etc. I really like where I live in Cary as I love the convenience of of my location and being able to walk to so many stores but if money was no object, I'd head to ITB. There are many areas of Chapel Hill that I really love too but CH isn't as convenient for me for me in terms of work or where my friends live.

Lakestone Drive, on a little lake. It's only 11 minutes away. But there's a house there for $2.5K.

As in Brentwood, when you look at the lake, it makes you "feel" like you are far away and not so close to so many things. But it's convenient to everything. Like Brentwood. It just has a few more amenities.

I've been to lovely homes bordering Falls Lake that I'd be quite comfortable in, too.

That's the question my wife and I face now. Do we stay were we are--which is great, or do we move 40 miles to reduce my 1 hour commute? And with the idea that gas is going viral..I mean $4 a gallon.

Our other option is to convert the diesel into a WVO burner...

Durham. I'd either build a custom ultra-modern home on a piece of land that is slightly-isolated, but still close to amenities, or find an older (between 1960s-1980s) large house on a large piece of land, and gut it out and remodel it to suit my taste.

I currently live in North Raleigh, but I love Durham.

If money was no object I would stay in Cary and choose to spend the extra money helping people in need. I have no need for anything more than what I have and I see so many people less fortunate than me. I would use the extra money to help them achieve their dreams and maybe buy their first place.

Well, of course, if money was no object, we could all do both.

Since we're eliminating commutes and price, I'd have to say Carrboro. My wife and I are a lesbian couple and really just love the atmosphere there.
