Are there lots of small companies that operate outside of RTP? Where we are coming from in the Boston 'berbs, there are tons of small companies that are not located in Boston, but in the smaller towns outside of Boston. Thanks!

When I was down there I didn't see anything like a Rt 128 "technology" belt (495 also). My husband is going to be working near Briar Creek in Raleigh. So not all jobs are in RTP.

Definitely, yes! They're sprinkled all over the Triangle. And the great thing about working for one of these other firms is that you can avoid all of the traffic going in and out of RTP!

If you're talking about IT jobs, then no, most are located in the RTP, especially in the software development category. There are of course some jobs outside the RTP, like Epic Games in Cary for example, but not many.

My husband is in software development. He does not work in RTP. I know of other people on these boards who work in the same field who also do not work in RTP.

The Triangle isn't a one trick pony. There are jobs all over, but yes, RTP is a major hub. According to the website for RTP, about 40,000 professionals work there!

I am in the accounting field, so you think I will be able to get a job outside of RTP? Even though I live in the Boston area, I am not a big fan of traffic!

I was in accounting and was working in Apex for a few years until recently (started a business). I refuse to commute to RTP since I live out in FV and have come across plenty of jobs located in Cary, Raleigh, and Apex. This is expecially true if you are willing to work in a small company environment (what I personally prefer). I had a sweet 15 minute no traffic commute to Apex from here on back roads and it was just great (especially considering I'm from NY). Sure, I made 10K less than I would have made in RTP but I had a breeze of a commute and worked for a small company that promoted work/life balance. I was out of there on time every night and was able to enjoy my life outside of work. That to me, was WELL worth the 10K difference in salary since I consider my time and the abiliby to actually enjoy my life to be priceless. Just keep an eye out for them, they are there. The great thing about accounting is that it doesn't have to be industry specific. A widget's a widget to us and that give you so many more options. Good luck!

You are most wise.

I turned down many promotional opportunities since they would mean that I'd owe my whole life to the agency.
