We have friends coming from the west coast this week. Can anyone suggest a nice (higher end) restaurant near the Raleigh Convention center? We are not too picky; like steaks, seafood, Italian, Asian or sushi. Something with ambiance and quiet enough to talk. Thanks!

Well, there are a lot of new ones, but Second Empire is one of those "special occasion" kind of places, located in a historic house on Hillsborough St.

Close to convention center?

You could try the Posta Tuscan Grill(inside the new marriot next to the convention center).

La Volta is just across the street from the Marriot about a half block up Fayetteville Street.

Sono (sushi) is just a little further up Fayetteville Street.

If you are looking for walking distance, neither Bella Monica or Second Empire fit the bill, although SE is downtown and a rickshaw ride from the CC. NRB has some good ideas. Posta is under new management, but I was there Saturday for lunch and it is good, but not as good as it was. Haven't been to La VOlta, but heard good things. It is not as fancy as Posta. Sono is good, but more of a "see and be seen" crowd, so may be busy/noisy, depending what night you are there. One of the best restaurants in town is about a block from the CC ....Poole's Diner. The chef has gotten national attention, but it is kinda pricey. Poole's Diner

The MInt is another "white table cloth" place farther down Fayetteville street, good food, very quiet, nice upstairs bar. The Mint - Index

Again, if you want to catch a rickshaw, both Humble Pie and, of course, the infamous Pit are a couple blocks away over in Warehouse district. The Pit Humble Pie Restaurant
The Pit is a fancy bbq joint that has become famous from foodtv and Ed Mitchell beating Bobby Flay in a throw down. Humble Pie is small plates, great ambience, kinda funky, great food....one of my favorite in Raleigh.

Gravy for Italian or Sitti for Lebanese - both amazing, upscale and delicious

Sorry for my post. I dunno why I read RBC Center instead of Convention Center.
