Apex has some nicer retail (beaver creek), some suburban neighborhoods, an actual decent downtown main drag (which many Towns would like to have I would think) and then some very industrial places (that EQ place that blew awhile back and that huge oil/fuel place on 1010 that I heard might expand. No idea what that place actually does, but it is right across from a very suburban neighborhood and every time I go down that road there are these huge long oil gas tanker type trucks pulling out into busy traffic)

That was my reference to Apex being one of the only "Real" towns vs. all suburbia compared to most of the other Raleigh suburbs. Cary has a downtown but it isn't very central to the town, and probably most people who live in Cary rarely if ever go there. Apex's Salem street is beautiful, historic, walkable from quite a few of Apex's larger suburban neighborhoods, and a place that probably just about everyone in the town is familiar with and goes to regularly. Obviously the fact that Apex's population is around 40,000 vs Cary's 140,000 means that an old small downtown is going to be more central; but it definitely adds a charm to the whole town IMO. And when pretty much the whole town was assigned to Apex High School (until 2006), that helped it have even more of a community feel.
