A bit of a trend here, isn't there? (Except for Vicki, but she's always an outlier.) Seems most people - and least up until a few years ago - moved here due to jobs, often because their company transferred them here. (My story too). A lot of people came because they had to, but stayed because they wanted to.
Are we now seeing more people choosing to move here with the hope of finding something? (Whether it's a job or a better life in some way.)
Ha ha ha !
I'm used to being the "black sheep" of the family...my mom and sister say that about me too so it is nothing new!!!
Moved here 23 years ago to attend NCSU... (from Morehead City). Tried a short move to Europe in 2000, but it only lasted 4 months and we came back home. Also tried to move to Asheville around 1997 for my wife to be closer to her parents, but that didn't even last a year as we felt out of place and couldn't make any friends. Not really sure what keeps us here, guess it's just home to us after being here so long... plus, our kids were born here. No complaints other than pollen season!
graduated college & lived at home with my parents for a year to decide what i wanted to do. home was then the richmond, va area. i had a friend graduating meredith college here & buying a house. at the time the raleigh area was growing & she told me i needed to come on down. so, i got a job & moved down to "give it a year". 13 years later, here i am.
originally, my parents are from southwestern virginia but their parents' families had moved from western north carolina (brevard area) many years before that. so my dad likes to say that i've gone back to my family's long-time carolina roots.
i toy with the idea of moving. & given my husband's impending graduation from grad schol & job search, we may end up moving. but we'd love to stay in the area if possible. we'll see what happens.
Moved here last summer for my husband's work move.We were in Taiwan for 5 years before that.Been moving internationally every few years.I know myself,I whine for 8-9 months, then after a year it feels like home. And I hate moving when it's time to move.My kids love it.They are comfortable in many different cultures and we try to make the best of wherever we are.Lived up in PA,a few moves ago and NC is way nicer.Wherever we are as a family is home for us.This time around I miss my friends a lot but am confident it will get better.
We moved here to Cary 1997 from Pennsylvania where we were born and lived all our lives.
Weather/climate was the driving factor, but we wanted to try something just a little different just for the adventure of living somewhere other than PA.
I have enjoyed NC from the first week. I never looked back in homesickness or regret, but my wife was a trooper for the first 12-18 months. She is comfortable here now.
I wouldn't say PA was bad, as I lived there for many years. It probably will not pull me back out of NC, though.
We came with a transfer on my job, which we knew was shaky, meaning my wife left her good job behind.
No fear.
It is easier for folks who don't have responsiblity for kids.
I moved from Long Island in November 2006. Main reasons were cost of living and home affordability. It takes time to adjust, I'm still adjusting to some things, this is a great place to live.
We moved down here from Minnesota in June for better weather and more opportunities for our autistic daughter. So far we have not been disappointed, we feel comfortable here but more so when we get out into the community and learn more about the area and people. It's pretty easy to get stuck in a routine where you go to the same places all the time because they are familiar.
I agree that Raleigh can feel pretty land locked, but only two hours to the beach more than makes up for it
We moved here almost 3 years ago from RI - kids were grown and we were looking for a slower pace, better climate, better quality of life. We found jobs we really enjoy and have made several wonderful friends. Our daughter, her husband and their 3 kids have been living in China for almost 4-1/2 years....and we just found out that they are being relocated (his job) back to RI in June. We both love it here and have no intention of returning to RI.
