Could ya'll share where the best place to watch the sunrise near Durham is? I'm willing to drive up to 30 minutes for a great spot! I'd really appreciate it!

Landfill Park in N Raleigh is probably the best place since its highly elevated - clear shot right to the horizon, but I do not know if its closed before sunrise - you'd have to sneak in... easy enough from Falls River Ave or Sugarberry Ct. if you can't get permission from a ranger...

I second Mt Occoneechee. Also probably over the quarry at Eno River St Park.

Wouldn't a person have problems with all trees blocking the view of a sunrise at Mt. Occoneechee in Hillsborough? By the time you could get a shot of the sunrise it would be too late I would think? You only have a matter of minutes to get a good sunrise pic and once it's broken the horizon it's all but over.

The 751 bridge has some incredible sunsets and I'm assuming all you'd have to do is turn around to catch a sunrise? However there are trees there as well but I don't think they would be that much of a problem.

The landfill park someone mentioned would be a great spot I think and it's nice there. However it's not open that early? I'm always interested in good spots for sunrises and sunsets!

I drive that way to work, and the surise is incredible. If you are coming FROM Durham, it would be on your left (It's on my right coming in from Lee Co.). I guess it depends on the time of year for exact angle, but the lake gives a huge buffer from the trees. It is very common that I'll see a photographer on the bridge with a big camera taking shots. I think you can park just past the bridge on either side, which is convenient, and there is a big enough shoulder to stand ON the bridge to watch the sun.

Tomorrow, June 21, is the last day that the sun rises as early as 5:28. On Wednesday, June 22, the sun will begin rising a little later each day. Are there any sunrise gazers that want to celebrate this special Summer Solstice day by meeting at the Landfill Park in N. Raleigh and watching this last early sunrise of 2011?
