We moved 6 years ago from SoCal to Cary. We contacted AAA and they set up appointments with 3 movers that they use. You get a discount and extra coverage. It was pretty painless and the move went o.k. (the truck broke down and took an extra day to get to us).
We had a 1700 sq. ft house with lots of stuff (2 adults, 2 kids, 4 pets) and it cost us just shy of $10K. We packed and they loaded and unloaded (set up everything too). It was the peak season (summer) and it was also during the mass exodus from California. So, we paid a premium to leave the Golden State for North Carolina.
No regrets! We love it hear and do not miss the smog, the traffic, and the cost of living.
Instead of full service moving we used ABF when we moved from Fremont, CA to Raleigh four years ago. We were also moving from a 2 bedroom apartment. We rented two cubes and it was $2621.00. Would have been $2021 for one cube. Like I mentioned this was four years ago though, so it's obviously a little higher now.
I also used ABF Relocubes to move from San Jose to Cary. I was able to fit everything into a single cube, and I think it ended up only costing about $1200 or so.
