PCWorld magazine says Raleigh-Durham International Airport has the fastest wireless Internet service among U.S. airports. However, some travelers have lobbied RDU to provide the service for free instead of charging $7.49 per 24 hours for it.
Yeah I think it's lame the wifi isn't free at RDU. I usually just end up tethering my phone while there. Why would I pay $7.49 when I'm usually in the airport for no more than an hour tops? And I can't imagine too many people are doing long layovers in Raleigh since we're not a hub really.
So at least the charge has reduced from the $7.95 a day that RDU charged one year ago. As evaofnc mentions the charge is really for less than an hours use which makes it very expensive and an embarrassment that the 'Gateway to RTP' feels it has to nickel and dime passengers in this way. The thread on the discussions last year is attached for information.
hmm...let's see....You get to the airport and check your bag (if you aren't just carrying on board), you wait in line at security (whick always seems to be a crap shoot time-wise), you get through and put your shoes and belt back on and restuff your laptop into its bag, you visit the restroom then grab something to eat because they don't serve you squat on the plane, you arrive at your gate 30 minutes before departure for boarding and check any last voicemails or make those last minute calls....who has time to pull out their laptops and surf the Internet? I sure don't.

Most of the time I would agree. There have been a few times, however, where I've been stuck at RDU for a few hours due to flight delays/cancellations/rebookings, etc.
FYI if you have AT&T DSL or U-verse for your home internet service, you can use the wifi at RDU for no extra charge. I have found myself doing this on several occasions.
A few years back I arrived a little less than an hour early for a flight and wound up missing it due to huge long lines at the checkin counter. So therefore I always try to make it to the airport at least an hour and a half early. On most occasions, this generally means that I spend about an hour and twenty minutes waiting around for my flight. If I have wifi and a laptop, I can use that time productively rather than twiddling my thumbs.

People sitting around waiting for connections? Delayed flights? People who actually give themselves time to get the airport and relax a bit before taking off? I can't remember the last time I got to a terminal with only 30 minutes left before a flight.

Yep this. I'd rather get to the airport too early than too late.
According to the link above the Magazine gave RDU its ranking over its download speed.
13.62 mbps download and 9.38 mbps upload speed.
However Charlotte who was ranked 2nd in the list has a faster upload speed.
13.72 mpbs upload speed and 11.54 download speed.
The lowest Wi Fi speed goes to LaGuardia 2.78 mbps download and 2.83 mbps upload.
